Beginning Chorus Thursday 11/15/18

Thursday 11/15/18
We started off class with some exercises to help us keep our necks aligned and our breaths tall. We then moved into Hallelujah Chorus. We worked on the last 3 pages of the song going over it and reminding ourselves of our parts. On Flow water we worked on phrasing. We were told to start louder and decrescendo until "river" where we crescendo through the "ver" in river and then slowly decrescendo till the end of the phrase. We repeat this similarly down the 1st page. We finally split to work on our separate men's and women's pieces. we worked on pages 11 and 12 in Sleigh bells and Mrs. Patchett will post separate part tracks on her website to so we can learn our parts for this women's only piece.

Begging Chorus Friday 11/9/18

Friday 11/9/18
We spent most of the class learning about Key signatures. Key signatures are groups of sharps (#) and Flats (♭) at the begging of a song that tell you what notes will be sharped and flat throughout the entire price. All major key signatures keep the pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H going up its scale. If a note is sharped of flat in the key signature that same letter name, no matter what clef and its position on the staff, is that accidental, unless marked otherwise with a different accidental.

There is a rule for finding what the key signatures' name is  but it changes when you are working with flats or sharps.
The sharp rule is:
  • Find the letter name of the farthest right sharp and go to the next letter up (ex. F# is farthest sharp the key's name is G)
  • the sharp key signatures will always be put in this order F C G D A E B
  • If you have a C# you will always have a F#. Like wise if you have a G# you will always have a C# and F# and so on.
  • 2 oddities are the Keys F# Major and C# Major since wen you go up a letter note from the most right sharp the F or C already has a sharp making it a F# or C#.
The Flat rule:
  • The name of the key is the letter name of the 2nd to last sharp (this makes almost all flat key signatures have a ♭ in its names)
  • The Flats will always be in the Order of B E A D G C F
    • You can see this is the Sharp order reversed so you only need to memorize 1 and then just flip it for the other (in my opinion the flat one is easier since BEAD and GCF are more likely to be remembered)
  • Only exception is F major which only has B♭ in its Key
If you are giving the starting note of the scale that note no matter whether the key is with sharps or flats is the Key name

Beginning chorus Wednesday 11/7/18

Wednesday 11/7/18
Since we had testing today we spent 3 hours in choir. To maximize productivity we split into our voice part, soprano, alto, bass, and tenor. We all learned our voice parts, to the end, separately for the songs Ose shalom, Flow Water, and Hallelujah. If you were absent today at least get a general idea of your part in these songs all the way to the end, we still need to do work on them so don't think that we will not sing these songs until the concert, we will sing and work on them during class.

Beginning Chorus Thursday 11/1/18

Thursday 11/1/18

We were taught measures 31-45 in Flow water, the notes are kinda clashy and the rhythm is weird so be careful. We also learned measures 18-29 in Si Si ni moja, we ended up running the entire song even though there are parts we don't know. Si si ni moja is really repetitive so we kinda got through it. Also the men learned 41-51. Even though there are alto and soprano lines we did not learn them today. We then worked a little bit on our separate men or women pieces.

Beginning Chorus Monday 10/29/2018

Monday 10/29/18
We learned a lesson on Major scales. A major scale is a scale that follows the pattern of Whole,Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half. Tomorrow and Wednesday we will have a substitute and Mrs. Patchett expects us to be on our best behavior. We will get a worksheet with staffs and notes on them. The sheet will give us the starting note of the pattern and using accidentals we will label a major staff.

We worked on page 6 in Our Winter Wonderland, and measures 17-22 in Flow water. We also the rhythm in Hallelujah chorus in measures 34-41. The rhythm is weird because with every dotted note instead of holding the pitch longer we pause for just a sec. like taking a tiny breath.

Beginning Chorus Wednesday 10/24/18

Wednesday 10/24/18    Beginning chorus
We worked on measures 22-32 in Hallelujah chorus, and we worked on measures 1-16 on Flow water. Since we took the Theory test for unit 1 we got our unit 2 packet today. We only talked about seeing whole and half steps on a piano. A way to tell the difference is if 2 keys are directly next to each other without one in between (even if 2 keys are touching there might be a black key between them) then it is a half step. If there is one in between (including black keys) then in is a whole step.

We have sight reading factory this week is going to be counted as a QUIZ grade you also only have ONE chance to do it before submitting. It simply is sight reading solfege (Do,Re,Mi...) on a staff with only 1 step at a time.
