Begging Chorus Friday 11/9/18

Friday 11/9/18
We spent most of the class learning about Key signatures. Key signatures are groups of sharps (#) and Flats (♭) at the begging of a song that tell you what notes will be sharped and flat throughout the entire price. All major key signatures keep the pattern W-W-H-W-W-W-H going up its scale. If a note is sharped of flat in the key signature that same letter name, no matter what clef and its position on the staff, is that accidental, unless marked otherwise with a different accidental.

There is a rule for finding what the key signatures' name is  but it changes when you are working with flats or sharps.
The sharp rule is:
  • Find the letter name of the farthest right sharp and go to the next letter up (ex. F# is farthest sharp the key's name is G)
  • the sharp key signatures will always be put in this order F C G D A E B
  • If you have a C# you will always have a F#. Like wise if you have a G# you will always have a C# and F# and so on.
  • 2 oddities are the Keys F# Major and C# Major since wen you go up a letter note from the most right sharp the F or C already has a sharp making it a F# or C#.
The Flat rule:
  • The name of the key is the letter name of the 2nd to last sharp (this makes almost all flat key signatures have a ♭ in its names)
  • The Flats will always be in the Order of B E A D G C F
    • You can see this is the Sharp order reversed so you only need to memorize 1 and then just flip it for the other (in my opinion the flat one is easier since BEAD and GCF are more likely to be remembered)
  • Only exception is F major which only has B♭ in its Key
If you are giving the starting note of the scale that note no matter whether the key is with sharps or flats is the Key name
