announcements:

Concert Choir: Interims go home Today-you will also receive all work you have turned in. Save this work so you can use it to study after the break.
Concert Choir - As you leave 2nd period today, you need to do so silently.  The Nutcracker is being performed for local elementary schools and we need to be silent so as not to disturb the performance.
Concert & Beginning - If you are coming to tutorials today for lunch make sure you come down the hall silently. The Nutcracker is being performed for local elementary schools and we need to be silent so as not to disturb the performance.
Tutorials are available all lunch Thursday and Friday to do makeup work, use laptops and ask questions.
Auditions for next year’s Colla Voce Advanced Choir will be January 3rd and 4th and call backs will be January 5th.  You will need to sign up for one day either January 3rd or 4th, and then ALL who audition must attend January 5th for call backs.  There is no make-up day for auditions or for call backs.  You must make sure you schedule your audition in your calendar and Call Backs.  Auditions will run from 2:30-6:30 pm on the 3rd and 4th and you will only need to be available for about 10 minutes one of those days.  Call backs will run from 2:30-4:30 on Friday Jan 5th, and again, all who auditioned must attend. Students who will be in the 11th or 12th grade in 2018-2019 are eligible to audition for Colla Voce. Sign-ups to audition will be posted by the time we leave for winter break.  You need to be prepared to sing “Once Upon a Time” and sight-read at the equivalent of Level 5 on Sight-readingfactory.com under “choir unison”.
Auditions for Concert choir will be in class once we start 2nd semester.  If you will not be in choir 2nd semester this year but would like to audition for Concert Choir, you can schedule a time with Mrs. Patchett to audition starting January 23rd. Those auditions will be scheduled individually.

Sight Singing:
-None

Rehearsal Notes:
-Today Mrs. Patchett taught a lesson on music theory. It was all review and we talked about unit 5 which is identifying intervals with key signatures, and circle of 5ths.

Music Theory:
-We did 30 examples of Interval ID on musictheory.net. All key signatures ON!
- We were also handed a Circle of 5ths packet to complete

A brief overview of music theory if you are confused......

CIRCLE OF 5THS: this is super helpful and you need to have it memorized. In music, you can find relative major/minors and key signatures within the circle of 5ths. Start with C. The key signature for C major is clear. Go up a 5th and you get G. The key of G has one sharp. Go up another 5th from G and you get D. The key of D has 2 sharps and you keep doing that all the way up to the key of C#. For flats, it's the same but you go down a 5th. Start on C, down a 5th is F which has one flat. Down a 5th from F is B flat which has 2 flats and so on. That's a really basic description of he circle of 5ths but you need to know it because it's SUPER helpful throughout theory.

INTERVAL ID WITH KEY SIGNATURES: when identifying intervals you need to first look at the bottom note. IGNORE the key signature unless it affects any of the notes in the interval. If it does not affect any of the notes, just figure out the bottom note, think in terms of that key (if the note on the bottom is D, think 2 sharps) and then decide whether or not the top note is within the scale of the key signature of the bottom note. If it fits in the scale, then great! Count your interval and then it will be either major or perfect. If it does not fit in the scale, decide whether it's raised or lowered. If it's raised, it is augmented, if it's lowered a half step, it's minor (or diminished if it's a 1, 4, 5, or 8), and if it's lowered a whole step, then its diminished! If the notes are affected by the key signature, just do the exact same thing, but apply the accidental s to the notes. NOTE- this may change the bottom note and that's okay, now you're thinking in terms of whatever your new root note is.

If you need help with any of this, come to tutorials or ask someone from our class. Lots of people are good at this and there are several different methods to learn this so if one method is tricky, another one might work for you. I'm always available to help if you need it and so are lots of other people in our class!! :-)

Homework:
-Music Theory sheet on Circle of 5ths
-30 examples of Interval ID on musictheory.net

Sight Singing:
Today we did a Sight Singing example at a level 5 on the board. We started off doing a unison example in the key of E flat, then we moved to the key of C, and ended with a 4 part Sight reading example in the key of C. The goal is to be able to pull up quartets and accurately sing an SATB level 5 Sight reading example!

Rehearsal Notes:
-Today we worked on the following songs:
Joy to the World: we focused on sounding triumphant and working with the dynamics. Remember, we will be singing this at the tree lighting so it needs to be good!!
The First Noel: briefly talked about dynamics. We mainly went over questions about notes.

Music Theory:
-We reviewed our music theory packet today and focused on unit 4. Unit 4 talks about relative minors, minor scales (harmonic, melodic, and natural) and interval/interval quality. We also got a homework sheet that is due tomorrow... if you were absent today, review those at home tonight and get the missing work tomorrow!

What do choirs use to pay for things?

Answer: Har-money

Announcements:
-Our dress rehearsal is on November 30, and the concert is December 1st. Both are required!!

Rehearsal Notes:
-Today we worked on the following songs:
Carol of the Bells- we sang the whole song and stopped on specific parts checking notes. If you have a "ding or dong" make sure you close to the "ng" but still have a tall vowel behind it. Pay attention to dynamics!!
The Sleigh- we went through the whole song and it was pretty good!! Just remember that diction is SUPER important so people know what we are saying. It can be easy to mumble since it's so fast, but use strong consanants and have tall vowels!
Angels We Have Heard On High- we studied our music for about 5 minutes on our own to try and absorb the order of all of the lyrics and "Gloria's". Then we went through the song, specifically "Gloria's".

Rehearsal Notes:
-Today we worked on the following songs....
1. The Sleigh- We went over the end one more time to solidify notes and the 8 part split. Then we ran the whole thing at tempo and it sounded a lot better than before!
2. Angels- We sang the whole thing, but didn't have time to work on it because the bell rang. This piece needs a lot of work because the Gloria's are really sloppy. Make sure to work on this one at home.
3. Glow- Women worked on dynamics on the first and second pages. We also worked on making sure the song sounded smooth at the tenor and bass entrance. Dynamics are going to be really important for this song! We worked on where we want to get louder, slow down, make it legato, etc.
4. The First Nowell- Ran the whole thing. This one was pretty solid, make sure you aren't sacrificing the vowels for the consonants. Strong consonants are important, but when you have an 'r' or something, keep the space in your mouth tall so you don't accidentally chew the vowel. We also worked on dynamics!!

-Today we worked on the following songs....
1. Nutcracker Jingles- Sang through the whole thing. We spent quite a bit of time working on the reed flute section. Remember when you're saying "jingle" make sure you don't completely close to the 'ng' because it messes up the vowels. It was cool to sing it with Mr. Wilson accompanying!
2. Angels- We sang the whole thing, specifically working the Gloria section and memorizing where our Gloria's are different throughout the song.
3. The Sleigh- We sang through the whole thing and made sure our tempo was correct. We need to make sure we aren't slowing down in certain sections. We also fixed a few note problems.

"We don't serve minors here"

-There will be a singing quiz next Friday on any one of the songs we are performing for the concert. Make sure you know your notes and the music is memorized by then

Rehearsal Notes:
-Today we worked on the following songs....
1. Carol of the Bells- Sang through the whole thing. Sopranos remember to stress the first note in each measure at the beginning. Altos and tenors need to sound like Bells when they come in, closing to the "ng". We also specifically worked on gradually crescendoing to the climax of the piece which is "Gaily they ring while people sing". One more note.. only ONE song!! It's not "songS of good cheer" we took out the S so make sure to mark it in your music.
2. Betelehemu- We sang the whole thing making sure not to slow down on page 5. We need to keep the tempo and make sure the song sounds upbeat and happy. We also touched on making sure we have tall vowels and adding some dynamics to make certain places really stick out. There were a few note issues that we worked through, but overall we did pretty well with that one!
3. Glow- We sang through the whole thing and stopped to solidify a few particular sections. One section we worked on was the "in gentle tones of warmest white" section going into page 2. We went over some notes because this piece is tricky and we also tried hard to fit the parts together to make it flow and blend more smoothly!
4. The First Noel- We sang the whole thing and worked on the part where the tenors and basses are singing alone. Remember that if "the" is before a word with a vowel or vowel sound, it's "theeee" if it is in front of a consonant, it's "thuh"

2. The Sleigh- we learned from page 5 to the end and then put the whole thing together.. once we are more comfortable with it, we will speed it up a lot!
3. Carol of the Bells- we went through the whole song making sure the "Ding Dongs" sound percussive and the sopranos are following the conductor. Remember we will crescendo through the whole "Gailey" part. Also don't forget to close to the "ng" and pay close attention to dynamics!

-Our dress rehearsal will be November 30 after school and the winter concert is December 1. You are REQUIRED to be at both. If you have a conflict, email Mrs. Patchett.
-Honors Chorus concert is on Sunday in Winston Salem and it's going to be incredible! Go out to support Cameryn, Fran, and Kyle!!
-Thanks to all who came out last night for the beginning Choir informance!
-Remember to check your calendars for December 2nd to see if you are available around 1:00. We have been asked to sing the national anthem at school for a basketball tournament
-Ther will be a lunch rehearsal tomorrow during A lunch so make sure you are there to run Hallelujah and Nutcracker Jingles!

Rehearsal Notes:
-Today we worked on the following songs....
1. Betelehemu- We worked through the end of the song. Since we have been learning it in sections, we specifically focused on being able to put all parts together. We briefly went over pronounciation of the Nigerian words but they're said pretty much exactly how they look.
2. The Sleigh- we learned from page 5 to the end and then put the whole thing together.. once we are more comfortable with it, we will speed it up a lot!
-Class was cut kind of short today because a lot of us had club pictures and a good portion of us had Tri-M pictures which interrupted class so we just had kind of a chill day.

3. Nutcracker Jingles- We sang pages 3 through the top of 11. Not much time was spent on this one because it's really easy so we picked it up pretty quick. Just a reminder, if any of the ladies ever get lost, just remember a lot of times the sopranos & altos are singing ether in 3rds or 5ths!
5. Angles We Have Heard On High- learned notes for pages 3-7 keep strong consonants, this song will sound super cool if it's really clean!
